Acupuncture may alleviate babies' excessive crying (infantile colic), study suggests

Research published in Acupuncture in Medicine suggests that acupuncture may alleviate the symptoms of colic. Certainly it has been my experience at the clinic that acupuncture works very well to relieve colic pain and reduce episodes of crying in small babies. Colic usually begins around the age of 6 weeks and can continue up until 12-14 weeks. It occurs both in breast fed and formula fed babies, and can be very distressing. In breast fed babies a food trigger in the mothers diet can often be identified by paying attention to the time of day the episodes of distress occur. Eliminating trigger foods can be very helpful. Acupuncture works to relieve colic by strengthening the digestive system, building  the energy of the stomach and intestines, so that food can be processed more easily. Parents often worry that having acupuncture is going to be a very unpleasant experience for a baby. This is not the case, surprisingly. When babies are needled, the needles are not retained, and often they don't notice the insertion at all. Babies have no pre-conceived ideas about needles, so It is a lot easier to treat a baby sometimes, than to treat a nervous adult. Treatment sessions for babies and children take 30 mins, and are an excellent way to treat the common illnesses and discomforts of childhood.
