Acupuncture Helps Bladder Control, Stops Leakage
Urinary incontinence is a common and distressing condition, affecting 3.5 million people in the UK. Symptoms of loss of bladder control range from frequency and urgency of urination, to leaking which often occurs when lifting, sneezing or laughing. Bladder weakness can often occur after childbirth, or with diseases such as Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis, where nerve damage is a feature. An enlarged prostate gland is a common cause of bladder problems in men. Spinal nerves control how the muscles in the bladder and urethra move. Incontinence occurs if the bladder muscles contract or the muscles surrounding the urethra relax without warning. Acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system which in turn regulates the muscular contractions. In a Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine clinical trial, an electroacupuncture treatment protocol proved 86% effective in treating urinary incontinence.
