The Benefits of Acupuncture Treatment in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time when many women will find themselves trying acupuncture treatment for the first time, as it is a safe and side-effect free therapy for both mother and baby. Ever wondered what kind of conditions can acupuncture be used to treat in pregnancy? Quite a few, actually. Early pregnancy nausea causes a great deal of misery for many women. According to the British Acupuncture Council,  morning sickness is generally thought to occur because of the massive change in hormones although fatigue, stress or emotional factors can also contribute, as can the huge energetic changes are going on in the body. Acupuncture works to re-balance these energies. It can also treat underlying emotional factors that might be at work. Coming to terms with pregnancy and the changes it brings can bring forth all sorts of emotions, and acupuncture can address this. While it is always good to seek treatment sooner rather than later, acupuncture will treat any level of pregnancy related nausea, though more frequent sessions may be required if the problem has been there for a number of weeks.

Back pain is another common problem in pregnancy. It will often arise because of the shift in distribution of weight in the body. Sitting for long periods can cause problems, as can driving, so If your work involves  staying in one position for a large portion of the day then it's worth making a conscious effort to get up and move around at regular intervals. Gentle exercise such as yoga, undertaken with the help of a trained instructor can be a great help. Balance Method Acupuncture, developed by the late Dr Richard Tan is a great system to use when treating pregnancy related back pain, especially lower back pain. Many commonly used acupuncture points in the lower back area are contra-indicated in pregnancy as they are associated with labour induction. Balance Method acupuncture activates points on a channel related to the affected channel, usually on the arms and legs. This treatment works quickly and effectively on back pain, sciatica, and any kind of musculo-skeletal pain.

Acupuncture can also be used to treat common conditions which would not be problematic outside of pregnancy, but during which, because of the restricted options for treatment can be very unpleasant. Here are just some of them:
Common Cold and Cough
Breast pain
Knee and Foot pain
Swollen hands and feet
Skin rashes

People also use acupuncture in preparation for labour, and for pain relief in labour. Being in good shape physically is so important in order to facillitate a smooth labour. Pulse diagnosis during acupuncture treatment will point to deficiencies in blood, qi, or fluid balance in the body when and if they arise, and acupuncture can help to rebalance these. Having regular treatment during pregnancy is one way to stay in optimum condition, ready and able to enjoy your little bundle to the full when at last they are ready to meet you.
